The main tool of Generative AI 🛠️

Hey entrepreneurs!

How is it going? Have you already decided what part of business will be empowered with AI?

I hope so, and I want to continue on this topic.

In a previous letter, I mentioned that AI tools are simple GPT wrappers. But what does it mean and how does it work?

Be it a logo creator, your personal language teacher, or an AI developer who can write and understand your code better than you - under the hood, it is just a prompt or a sequence of prompts to the trained model, that helps to get the best answer, the best content, or analyze the topic.

So, today I want to introduce you to the main tool of Generative AI technology - the input of the AI model or Prompt.

We must remember that although it may seem like we talk to humans, we aren’t. We just give instructions to machines, guiding them on not only what to generate but also how to approach the generation process. Long story short, the clarity, specificity, and context matter a lot.

If you want to get really good results from Generative AI - master your prompts and experiment, but make sure you are familiar with patterns and techniques that are already available. Here are my favorites:

1. Persona Pattern

Use: Ideal for customer service or role-specific tasks.
Example
Act as a sales rep explaining product X to a potential customer.

2. Audience Persona Pattern

Use: Useful for tailoring content or explanations to a specific audience.
Example:

Explain the importance of data security as if you are speaking to a non-tech-savvy small business owner.

3. Recipe Pattern

Use: Great for step-by-step guides or processes.
Example:
I want to set up a basic marketing campaign for my new product.

I know that I need to identify my target audience, create engaging content, and select the right channels for distribution.

Provide a complete sequence of steps for me. Fill in any missing steps:

  1. Define the target audience.

  2. Set clear campaign objectives.

  3. Choose the marketing channels.

  4. Create engaging content.

4. Template Pattern

Use: Effective for generating consistent format content such as reports, emails, or social media posts.
Example:
This is the email template: [Introduction], [Offer details], [Call to action]. Fill in the placeholders with content promoting our upcoming webinar.

But there is more than just a prompt pattern. Experiment and iterate by adjusting your prompts based on AI answers.

Below are two techniques that I mostly use with ChatGPT-like tools:

N-Shot Prompting

Here, you provide the AI with multiple examples of the desired output. This is particularly useful when you need consistency in voice, style, or format across various documents or communications.

For example, providing three examples of how customer service inquiries were handled excellently can help the AI maintain a high standard in automated responses.

Chain-of-Thought Prompting

This involves including a logical sequence in the prompt to guide the AI in solving more complex problems.

If you are trying to analyze customer feedback to improve a product, a chain-of-thought prompt might look like this:

"Read through the customer feedback on product X, identify common themes, evaluate which are the most critical issues, and suggest possible improvements based on these issues."

That's all for today, my friends. Keep learning and building, and I hope that AI can help you do it faster!

See you later,

A.
